'O God, carry us in the ships of Thy deliverance, give us to enjoy the pleasure of whispered prayer to Thee, make us drink at the pools of Thy love, let us taste the sweetness of Thy affection and nearness, allow us to struggle in Thee, preoccupy us with obeying Thee, and purify our intentions in devoting works to Thee, for we exist through Thee and belong to Thee, and we have no one to mediate with Thee but Thee!' Extraordinary angels of the day of Ashura, alongside the Qaaim [af]

Ibn Qulawayh Al Qummi, Kaamil al-Ziyarat

Abaan Ibn Taghlib narrates from Abu Abdillah (Imam Sadiq [as]) who said,
It is as if I can see the Qaaim [af] in Najaf (next to) Kufah wearing an armour of the Messenger of Allah [saw].

He will shake the armour (first) and then it will wrap itself around him, after which he will cover it with a robe made of brocade.

He will be riding a pitch-black horse which has a raceme (a simple flower cluster having the flowers on short stalks along a stem) on its forehead. He will
jump with the horse in such a way that people in every country will see him as if he is with them in their (own) country.
Then he will unfold the flag of the Messenger of Allah [saw]. The flag pole is from the pillars of the Throne while the rest of the flag is from Allah's victory! If he points this flag to anything, Allah will destroy it. When he shakes the flag, the heart of every believer will become like a strong piece of iron and each believer will be given the strength of forty men.

Every believer who has died will feel the happiness (of the rising of the Qaaim [af]) in his grave. They (the dead believers) will start visiting one another in their graves and will give glad tidings to one another about the rising of the Qaaim [af].

Then thirteen thousand three hundred and thirteen angels will join the Qaaim [af].
I (Abaan Ibn Taghlib) asked, 'This many angels will join him?'

Imam [as] replied:
'Yes. (These are) the angels who were with Nuh in the ark [Quran 11:36-48], with Ibrahim when he was cast in the fire [Quran 21:51-70], with Musa when he split the sea for the Bani Israel[Quran 26:52-66], and who were with Isa when Allah ascended him to Himself [Quran 4:157-159].

Among these angels are also the four thousand '(fully equipped) distinguished angels' [Quran 3:125] and the one thousand 'angels who came in an unbroken succession' [Quran 8:9] who were with the Prophet [saw], the three hundred and thirteen angels who fought in the battle of Badr and the four thousand angels who descended to fight along with Husein [as] but who were not permitted to fight.

Four thousand angels descended on the day of Ashura to fight along with Husein [as] but they were not permitted to fight. Therefore they ascended back to the heavens to seek permissionfrom Allah. However, by the time they came back, Husein [as] had been killed. Therefore they remain next to his grave, disheveled and covered with dust, and they cry over him (and will continue to do so) until the day of Judgment. Their chief is an angel named Mansur.

These angels receive everyone who comes to the Ziyarah of Husein [as] and they accompanythem when they bid farewell to Husein [as]. They visit them if they become ill, establish prayerson them in their funerals when they die, and seek forgiveness for them after their death.
All of these angels are on earth waiting for the rising of the Qaa'im [af]'

Significance of the Ziyarah of Hussein ['aS]

Ibn Qulawayh Al Qummi, Kaamil al-Ziyarat

Hanan Ibn Sadiq from his father narrates through a chain of narrators:

Abu Abdillah (Imam Sadiq [as]) asked me, 'O Sadir! Do you perform the Ziyarah of the grave of Husein [as] once every day?'
I replied, 'May I sacrifice myself for you! No.'

Imam [as] said: 'How negligent you people are! Do you perform his Ziyarah once every month?'
I replied, 'No.'

Imam [as] asked, 'What about once every year?'
I replied, 'Sometimes.'

Imam said:
'O Sadir! How negligent you people are toward Husein [as]. Do you not know that Allah has onemillion angels who are disheveled and covered with dust, who cry over Husein [as], and who perform his Ziyarah (at all times) and they never pause?!

O Sadir! How difficult is it for you to perform the Ziyarah of the grave of Husein [as] five times every friday and once every day?'

I replied, 'May I sacrifice myself for you. There is a great distance between us and his [as] grave.'

Imam said:
'Go to the roof of your house, look to the right and left, raise your head towards the sky, and then try to face the direction of the grave of Husein [as] and say:
'Assalamu Alayka Ya Aba Abdillah. Assalamu Alayka wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh'
'Salam to you, O Aba Abdillah. Salam to you and may Allah's mercy and blessings be upon you'

By doing so, a Zawrah will be registered for you. And Zawrah is the performance of a hajj and anUmrah'

Sadir added, 'After hearing this, there were times when I would perform this Ziyarah twenty times during the day.'

Imam Sadiq [as]'s secret to Safwaan

"O Safwaan! Allah has sworn that one who recites my grandfather's (Imam Husain [as]) ziyaarat from near or afar, and raises his hands to seek his demands after reciting this ziyaarat, shall find Allah fulfilling his demands. Allah, on account of this ziyaarat, shall not let disappointment and dejection befall his servant. Allah will bestow him with nothing less than Paradise andimmunise him from the Fire. His stature shall be elevated manifold, so that he will be bestowed with powers of intercession on the day of mahshar. O Safwaan! Reciting Ziyaarat of Imam Husain (a.s) is equal to Ziyaarat of Allah at the Arsh (throne)."
(Bihar al-Anwar vol.98 pg 300)

The faith of Hussein [as]

Ibn Qulawayh Al Qummi, Kaamil al-Ziyarat

Jaabir (Al-Ju'fi) through a chain of narrators narrates from Abu Abdillah (Imam Sadiq) [as] who said:

Ali, (the Commander of the believers [as]) said to Husein [as], 'Oh Aba Abdillah, it has been previously established that you will be the leading example' (One of the possible meanings of this statement is that Imam Husein [as] has always been the leading example for all people and specifically for those who suffer from any affliction, even before his time).
'May I sacrifice myself for you. What is my status?' Husein [as] asked.
'You have the knowledge of that which others do not and those who are knowledgeable shall benefit from their knowledge,' the Commander of the Believers [as] replied.
The Commander of the Believers [as] continued:
'O my son! Listen and envision this before it happens to you. I swear to He who has my life in his hand, that the Bani Umayyah will spill your blood but they will not be able to deviate you from your religion nor will they be able to make you forget extolling your Lord.'
Husein [as] replied, 'I swear to He who has my life in his hand, that this is sufficient for me. I submit to that which Allah has revealed, I believe the words of the Messenger of Allah (saw) and I do not belie the words of my father.'

A Code of Practice For Muslims in the West: Interaction in social life » Questions and Answers
Fatawa of Ayatullah al Uzama Syed Ali al-Husaini Seestani

327: Question: Is it permissible for those who reside in the West to send their muhajjaba daughters to co-ed schools (irrespective of whether or not education is compulsory) while there exist non co-ed schools which obviously are expensive, located faraway or of a low academic standard?

Answer: It is not permissible, [even] if it [just] corrupts their character, let alone if it harms their beliefs and commitment to the faith which is what normally happens!

Imam Sajjad (as) and The Caravan to Hajj

A caravan of Muslims was headed towards Makkah. As it arrived in Madina, it rested a few days, and continued on towards Makkah.
On their way from Madina to Makkah, a man joined the group. This man noticed one of them who had the appearance of a guided person. He was eagerly busy in service of the passengers. The man recognized him. With much surprise, he asked the pilgrims if they knew this man who was at their service.
''No, we don't know him. He joined us in Madina. He is a decent and pious man. We haven't asked him for help. But he has been eager in helping us."
"Obviously you don't know him. For if you did, you would never have allowed a man like him to be at your service."Who is this person?"
"This is 4th Imam, Imam Sajjad (as)."
The group stood with shame and apologized to Imam Sajjad (as). Then complaining to him, they said:
"Why did you treat us as such? We may have gone beyond our bounds in our ignorance, and would have committed a big sin in being disrespectful to you."
Imam Sajjad (as): "I intentionally joined your group, for you didn't know me. When I join a group, where people know me, for the sake of the Prophet Mohammed (pbuh), they are very kind to me. They don't allow me to be of some service. Thus I was eager to join a group where I will be anonymous, so that I may have the honor of being of some service to my brethren."
Moral: Service to fellow Muslims should be a pleasure, something we should go out of our way to do! Besides it being one of the fundamentals of the spiritual journey - Hajj!

VISION: THE CLIMAX OF HAJJ

When prophet Musa (‘a) went to Mount Sinai and had a secret mutual conversation with Allah for thirty nights [Wa waa‘adna Musa thalathina laylatan (and And We made an appointment with Moses for thirty nights- Qur’an 7:142], they actually were the thirty nights of the holy month of Dhu al-Qa’da [Ref: ‘Allama Majlisi, Bihar al-Anwar, v.13, pp. 213-214], a month when those who aspire to meet the Beloved, and not merely His house (ka’ba), engage in spiritual pursuits in preparation for the fundamental vertical (spiritual) journey to the Beloved.

Then Allah says “wa atmamnaahu bi ‘ashr” (And we completed them with ten [more days]-Qur’an, 7:142). Almighty Allah confers ten more days to Musa (‘a) for munajat. And these ten days are the very first ten days of the holy month of Dhu al-Hijja when the hajis are busy in their spiritual excursion.

Having undergone specific stages of spiritual change through the help of his Lord, Musa (‘a) finally asks for vision. He says, “Rabbi arini anzuru ilayk” (My Lord, show [Yourself] to me, that I may look at You!’- Qur’an, 7:143).

Insightful scholars like Imam Khumayni say that Musa (‘a) did not aspire for vision through the physical eye, free from such kind of thinking are the Prophets of Allah [Ref: Imam Khumayni, Notes on Nubuwwat, p. 352]. He yearned to see the Beloved through the heart. Such vision obviously is not “complete comprehension” which presumes the comprehending one to encompass the object of comprehension. It rather is a limited comprehension of the Divine Attributes according to the capacity of the beholder. And this can only be achieved through self-purification, whose fundamental stages according to authoritative divine sages are as follows:

1) Al-Tajliya (Strictly adhering to the apparent Islamic laws and refraining from whatever Islam has prohibited)
2) Al-Takhliya (Cleaning oneself through the water of repentance and tawba)
3) Al-Tahliya (Beautifying oneself with the perfections of the Absolutely Beautiful according to one’s capacity)
4) Al-Fana (Dissolution in the Beloved, such that one visions that no identity exists save that of Allah)

Aspirants of hajj should try to journey through these stages, so that on the 10th of Dhu al-Hijja they deserve to put on the Ihram of Musa (‘a) and sincerely yearn for the vision of the Only Beloved.

What is so captivating is to behold the Musa of Karbala, who in the Mount Sinai [Bihar al-Anwar, v.98, pp. 108-109] of Ghadhiriyya (another name for Karbala), is reported to have said:

I left the entire creation in Your Desire
And made my family orphans so that I may see You
So even if you cut me into pieces in my love for You
My heart would not incline to other than You

This peerless Musa of history was so intensely sacrificing, that the Beloved bestowed him with peerless bestowals, one of which is:
Al-sujud ‘ala turbat al-Husayn (‘a) yakhriqu al-hujub al-sab‘ (prostrating on the clay of al-Husayn severs the seven veils [‘Allama Majlisi, Bihar al-Anwar, v.82, pp. 153]). A probably meaning of the seven veils is ‘the seven levels of existence’, the highest of which is in the close proximity of the All-Beloved.

But the Beloved’s love is so special for this Moses of Karbala. According to a tradition narrated from Imam al-Sadiq (‘a) [Ref: ‘Allama Majlisi, Bihar al-Anwar, v.98, pp. 87] Allah on the day of ‘Arafa begins with the visitors of the grave of al-Husayn first, and then the lovers stationed in the sacred plains of ‘Arafa.
We pray to Almighty Allah to enable us comprehend the secrets of Hajj better as we cross the stations of our transient life.

A stranger's Praise

[Bihar Al-Anwar 37:296; Amaali of Sh. Tousi 1:21]

The guardian scholar Abi Abdillah Mohamed bin Ahmad bin Shahryar Al-Khazen narrated from the scholar Abu Mansour Mohamed bin Abdul Aziz Al-Akbari, from Abul Hasan Mohamed bin Ahmad bin Mohamed bin Zarquweyh, from Abu Omar Othman bin Ahmad Al-Sammak Al-Daqqaq, frm Shareek, from Mansour, from Ibrahim, from Alqama, from Abdullah, who said:

'When Rasulallah (saw) became ill with his illness (before his death), Ali bin Abi Talib (as) went to him. He did not like anyone to go to the Prophet (saw) before him.

When Ali (as) entered the house, he found Dehya Al-Kalbi in the house. Rasulallah (saw) was asleep, with his head on Dehya's lap.

Ali (as) said, 'Assalamo Alayk'
Dehya replied, 'Wa Alaykum Assalam Wa Rahmatullah Wa Barakatuh. I love you and I want to praise you.'
Ali (as) replied, 'Speak'

Dehya said:
'You are the Commander of the Believers and you are the leader of the companions of Paradise. You are the master of mankind, (beginning) from Adam until the day of Judgement, with the only exception being Rasulallah (saw).
You and your Shia will be escorted to Paradise while you will be carrying the flag of Praise. Those who follow you will be saved, and those who do not follow you will be the losers and will be dissapointed. Those who love you, love you for the love of Muhammad, and those who hate you, hate you because of the hate of Muhammad, and they will not receive his intercession.
Come and hold the chosen creation of Allah, your brother, and your cousin because you are the closest to him.'
So Ali Bin Abi Talib (as) came close to the Prophet (saw). and took the head of the Prophet (saw) gently and placed it on his lap.
However, Rasulallah (saw) woke up and asked, 'What is this noise about?'

So Ali told him about his conversation with Dehya.

The Messenger of Allah said, 'He was not Dehya. He was Jibraeel.
He called you by the names that Allah has given you.
He (Jibraeel) is the one who places the love in the hearts of believers and your awe and fear in the hearts of disbelievers, and your status in Allah's eyes is much greater than this.'

LAYLATUL QADR

lengthy but a vital piece - in preparation for the grand night!

1. Is there a need to prepare for Lailatul Qadr?
In order to answer this, let us define what the word PREPARE means?

Simply, put it means to make ready or fit, to bring into a suitable state, to make one ready
For e.g. when we want to prepare a meal, or go out for an event, we must have a GOAL in mind.
As in what is my end result, the final dish or my final destination where I wish to end up.

And as per the subject under discussion i.e. “Preparing for Lailatul Qadr” our GOAL is to take full benefit/make full use of the BOUNTIES & RAHMA that Allah (swt) bestows opens us in this night of LAYLATUL QADR.

It is important that we first understand the significance of LAYLATUL QADR in order that we know what sort of ‘ingredients’ are required for our preparation to reach the Ultimate Goal which is earning the pleasure of Allah (swt)

2. What is Laylatul Qadr therefore?
You are all aware of its importance so I will just briefly re-run through it

In surah AL Qadr Allah (swt) clearly states: "Surely We revealed it (the Holy Qur'an) on the grand night. And what will make you comprehend what the grand night. The grand night is better than a thousand months. The angels and Gabriel descend in it by the permission of their Lord for every affair, Peace! It is till the break of the morning." (97:1-5)

Allah (swt) is inviting all the believers for a Divine feast; the invitation which has been brought by the messengers. Allah (swt) is the host, his most favorite angels are the servants and the believers are the guests. The table isDivine blessings spread with  containing all sorts of rewards and favors. Though the eyes cannot see them nor the ears hear them not the human hearts imagine them, yet the bounties are all kept in readiness to be awarded to the guests in accordance to her actions.

Lailatul-Qadr is a blessed night because the Almighty brings down during it goodness, bliss, and forgiveness for His servants. It is a feast which has come with a message that shows one the way to achieve happiness in both the worlds. Laylatul Qadr is a feast for the spirit, a feast of worship and prayers.

Ahadith indicate that the fate of every believer for the coming year is decreed on this night.

When our Prophet (saw) was asked how man could enjoy the favors and good grace of proximity to, and mercy of, Allah (swt) he quoted Nabi Musa’s (as) supplication:
“Oh My God, I seek proximity to You; He (Allah) said: Proximity to Me is for him who stays awake on Laylatul Qadr
“Oh My God, I am in need of Your Mercy; He said: My Mercy is for him who shows mercy to the poor on Laylatul Qadr
“Oh My God, I am in need of the passport to cross the bridge; He said: that is for him who give alms on Laylatul Qadr
“Oh My God, I am in need of the trees in Paradise and their fruits; He said: that is for him who seeks forgiveness on Laylatul Qadr
“Oh My God, I seek deliverance from fire; He said: that is for him who remembers Allah on Laylatul Qadr
“Oh My God, I seek Your good pleasure; He said: that is for him who says a two rakat prayer on Laylatul Qadr

On another occasion Nabi Musa (as) said: “Oh My God, are You far away that I shout to You, or are You near that I whisper to You?” He said: “O Musa, I am sitting together with you!”

3. What do we therefore have to remind ourselves about Laylatul Qadr?
That it is:
• A unique once in a year opportunity to do a life times worth of activity.
• Full of long lasting blessings
• The night of unsurpassed grandeur when the absolute Grand God revealed the Grand qur’an through the Grand Wahy - Jibraeel into the heart of the Grand Holy Prophet (saw)

• A once in a year occasion for influencing our future destiny - “QADR” - taqdeer. The Masumeen have explained to us that god in his infinite wisdom had planned the system of the universe in such a way that every persons destiny will be determined on a yearly basis in the angelic spheres through the agency of the imam of the age. Who is the leader and focus of the whole spiritual world) this gives MANKIND a unique opportunity to influence his own future (gains, loss/health/sickness, richness/poverty/ etc by performing certain acts, e.g. dua salat, sadaqah, jihad, acquiring knowledge, quran recitation etc.

• The night when the whole multitude of angels and the great spirit (ruh) descend on earth, greeting and praying for the believers and conveying messages to the Imam of age.

4. Do we than still need to PREPARE OURSELVES FOR LAYLATUL QADR after knowing its significance?

Yes, Let us imagine for a moment that we are invited for a special feast by the president of our country, who also tells us in advance that he is going to reward us with magnificent gifts as per the way we present and behave ourselves during the feast -

 What would we do ?

After the initial euphoria, we would leave no stone unturned to present themselves in the best possible manner. Preparations of what to wear, how to get there, what will I speak with the president, If I have to go through his secretary what will I say to him, what sort of gifts will I take with me, what sort of conversation with I have with him, all this and more will be thought about, rehearsed and re-rehearsed. Correct me if I am wrong!!

All this ‘tension’ in honor of an invitation from the President of a country. Lailatul Qadr is an invitation from the President of all Presidents, The Supreme One. Do we need to make preparations for this night?

Undoubtedly, we must start our preparations way ahead of time, after all going by human fitra, there is more than profit that can be got from this feast of Lailatul Qadr unless out of sheer carelessness we end up amongst those negligent and idle ones, who do not achieve anything except tiredness, loss and eternal doom, who will gain nothing except regret and cry out aloud on the day of Reckoning:

"Ah! Woe upon me! In that I neglected (my duty) towards Allah."

5. What sort of Pre-preparations are needed before the advent of this grand Qadr?
Jibrael was asked; "What has the Almighty Allah done on this night with the wishes of the believers among the nation of Muhammad (pbuh)?" He answered, "The Almighty Allah has looked upon them on this night and forgiven them, all of them, except the following:
“One who is addicted to drinking, One who severs his ties with his kin, and One who is a trouble-maker."

We have been advised to beseech Allah (swt) during the whole year before the arrival of the Night of Power, to keep us alive for this night,

• To bestow upon us the towfiq to remain vigilant during this night and pray for blessings and forgiveness.
• To bless us that we are able to do the best of deeds on this night
• To comprehend fully the importance of this night which is superior to one thousand months.
• To pray that we can become one of the favorites of Allah (swt) and be blessed with His love, learning, nearness, union, pleasure, together with health, happiness, and welfare;
• To yearn and act so that Allah (swt) be so pleased with us in such a manner, that after this night He would never be displeased us again.
• To pray that our Aimma esp. the Imam-ul-Asr be pleased with us & intercede on our behalf

6. How to Prepare oneself for The Night of Power (Lailatul-Qadr).

(I) Preparing Mentally
• Strive to keep Allah (swt) at the fore of one’s mind the whole night long.
• All the Ibadah done should be recited in the state of being completely awake, aware, conscious, and with a live heart
If one feels that one will not be able to concentrate then start reciting from now "We are from Allah and towards Him is our return.” - Holy Qur'an (2:156) for it is considered as a tragedy if one can not in this night receive the divine grace in supplications

"Their prayers ascend upwards and reaches Allah, their words are accepted, and Allah loves to listen to their prayers the way a mother likes her own child."

Is not it shameful that the prayers which ascend upwards should be recited from the tip of the tongue, while the heart and soul remain occupied in worldly affairs?

Many a times, one feels that one cannot ‘properly’ perform a certain ibadah and so decided to forgo it. One should not do listen to this ‘waswas’ instead, one should perform it & more, for acceptance lies in the Hand of the Mercy of Allah (swt).

(ii) Preparing Physically
The other preparations to be done for this night are,

• for worshipping in this night a suitable place, dress, and perfume should be arranged in advance (comfortable dress which does not distract us)
paying alms during this night - to the people who really deserve financial support
• Follow the translation of the duas in order to understand what you are reciting for lutf is only got when one knows what one is reciting.

(iii) Preparing spiritually
increase ones eagerness for receiving the promised bounties and blessings;
select worships and deeds which are more in harmony with ones mood
• When one stands for prayer, or any other ibadah, to briefly spare a moment to think about the wisdom of that action/its meaning etc for e.g. Why am I standing towards Mecca? To realize that when I stand on my two feet, it indicates my hope and fear about the acceptance of my worship
• Resorting (Tawassul) to Ahlul-Bait [a] - With persistence, supplicating in a polite and soft manner, with words and content arousing their sympathies, should beseech them for bestowing upon us the grace of being vigilant during this night.
Crying and Shedding Tears: that during these nights ones fear, humility, tears, crying, anguish, and lamentation be increased as much as possible.
The Learned Scholar Hajj Mirza Javad Agha Maliki Tabrizi (r.a.) in his book (Suluk-i Arifan) Spiritual Journey of the Mystics tell us that One of the best method is that one should tie ones hands around ones neck; should pour dirt upon ones head; should place ones head against a wall; sometimes one should stand and sometimes one should cry; should imagine oneself at the scene of Judgment Day; and the way sinners are rebuked with harshness, then one should imagine and be scared least Allah (the Glorious, the Exalted) orders: "Seize ye him, bind ye him, burn ye him in the blazing fire, and make him march in a chain whereof the length is seventy cubits." - Holy Qur'an (69:30-32)
Then one should cry: "O' Thou are the most compassionate, and Thou Who are the shelter of unsheltered ones!" "Where is Your vast blessing? Where is Your infinite forgiveness? Where are Your love and benevolence?" Ask for forgiveness of past sins in the most appealing manner with a promise to try never to return to the sins again - a TAWBA in every sense of the word Present ones requests before the Almighty with full hope that they will be answered. The Prophet (S.A.W.) when asked what one should invoke Allah during these nights, said: "Ask for your safety (here and in the hereafter)".

7. Recommended Ibadah to be performed on The Night of Qadr:
WE are advised that this night be divided into 3 parts -
1st part to be allocated for Gaining Knowledge - Najhul Balagha, Tadabbur etc
2nd part to be allocated for Meditation (not when you are too sleepy)
One should not forget to select a period for having a private union between oneself and ones Creator and
3rd part to be allocated for Salatul Layl to connect with Nawaafil with Subh prayer

Suggested ways to get the maximum of this blessed opportunity
1: Imam al- Sadiq (as) quotes “On all these nights, it is recommended that you perform the ghusl twice: once at the beginning of the night, and once at its end”.
When performing the recommended ghusl, to remember that while god likes physical cleanliness, more important He loves inner cleanliness of the heart, from immoral character e.g. jealousy, greed, etc. Thus resolve to clean the soul also by TAUBAH + JIHAD of NAFS

2: When praying 2 rakat namaz of recommended prayers with 7 times surah tawheed, make efforts to concentrate on the message of tawheed and get the heart to believe that truly GOD ALONE is ALL -powerful/All Merciful/Independent etc. therefore we should fear none BUT HIM, hope from none BUT HIM, we should ask from none BUT HIM

3: After the salaah when repeating ISTEGHFAR 70 times try to first be really repentant for serious mistakes done, sincerely ask for forgiveness either by:
(a) recalling 70 different sins OR
(b) feeling remorseful for 10 sins of the 7 main organs: eyes, ears, tongue, hands, mouth, stomach + private parts OR
(c) some particular sins that you may have committed repeatedly OR
(d) recalling the variety of punishments of different sins and finally resolve NOT TO Repeat them in the future, then only can one realistically expect to deserve the reward the HP has promised “Whoever performs this act will surely be forgiven by the Almighty even before here rises from his place".

When opening the qur’an and praying for your needs with the intercession of the qur’an, realize that while the qur’an is a cure for spiritual illness, it only benefits the pious ones and the evil doers are deprived of its illumination. Thus increase the chances for qur’an intercession to work on your behalf by earnestly following the rulings of the qur’an.

While placing the qur’an on the head. Remind yourself that true salvation can only be achieved by always keeping the rules of qur’an ahead of us to follow. The fact that we put the Qur’an on our head is a sign of respect and reverence. We beseech Allah by the thaqalayn - the speaking and the silent Qur'an. - Holy Qur'an (39:56)

As you seek intercession of the Al mighty (bika ya al…) and the 14 infallibles realize that God is limitless Ounces of Mercy and the Ma’sumen pure agencies for the distribution of divine mercy to all creations.

While performing Ziyarah of Imam Husein (as), remind yourself that on this august night, the souls of 124,000 Prophets (peace be upon them all) visit Imam, who is aware of our inner spiritual reality and is hurt and repulsed by our record of repeated evil deeds, indifference to God’s commandments; thus, we should avoid disgracing ourselves in that great audience of Imam. Also, associate the themes in the ZIYARAH of:

• Firm bond of love and obedience of God (SALAT).
• Economic betterment of community (ZAKAT).
• Overall mobilization of forces towards virtue (AMR BIL MA`RUF).
• Overall cleansing of evil from society.
• All-out war in all spheres of life to promote truth (JIHAD).
• Tremendous endurance of all ensuing difficulties (SABR).
• Complete distancing (LA`NAH) from all forms of injustice (DHULM) with destiny- shaping opportunity of this night and resolve to become on active player in improving the future in preparation for the REAPPEARANCE OF AL-MAHDI.

8. How to Farewell the Night of Power (Lailatul-Qadr) One should resort (tawassul) to the M'asumin - to whom that night belongs - should submit ones deeds & worship to those exalted ones, with a heart broken, with grief & shedding tears, should request them to make those deeds as righteous, and request them to intercede with Allah (swt)

9. The Day of Power (Qadr)
According to Ahadeeth both the night and day are interconnected, as far as their worth, value, esteem, and splendor are concerned, i.e. if the day is esteemed and honorable, the night of that day also possesses the same distinction and vice versa. Therefore, we must appreciate the importance of the Days of Power and like the Nights of Power, should celebrate them by sincerely performing worships and righteous deeds.

On a final note, our destiny to large extent can be changed in this very night and much depends on us, how we decide to utilize both the night and the day of Qadr and for that matter each single moment of this blessed month of Ramadhan.

Let us therefore pray together that we may be granted the Tawfiq to be able to do the A’maals of Laylatul Qadr in its correct essence, that we may be granted the Maghferah and that we may earn the Pleasure of Allah (swt) in such a manner that our lives take a positive turn in a manner that we may earn the salvation for both this world and the Hereafter. Ameen

A humble request that we remember each other in our prayers and especially those we do not forget our Marhumeen...

The great month - Ramadhan

Ramadan is much more than a time of fasting; this is a time of spiritual intensification and of increased sensitivity to spiritual realities. The Source of Life is infinitely generous, having provided us with an infinite material existence beyond our comprehension, as well as an inner world of the Heart. Gratitude is a way to develop our heart awareness, and to deepen our relationship with the Reality. To help focus this task, one might consciously breathe Ya Shakur, for a period of time at dawn and dusk.
Those among His servants who have knowledge stand in awe of God:
for God is Almighty, Continually-Forgiving.
Those who recite the Book of God and are constant in prayer,
and share, secretly and openly, out of what We have provided for them,
and they hope for an exchange that will never fall short:
for He will reciprocate,
no, He will surpass them out of His abundance;
for He is Continually-Forgiving, Always Responsive to Gratitude.
Qur'an 35:28-30
Unique Characteristics of Fasting
Sh M Leghaie
Fasting, like praying and pilgrimage to Hajj, is worshipping. Nonetheless, it has its own unique characteristics. The following are some of the unique characteristics of fasting.

•  The longest worshipping: Fasting is the longest worshipping of God. Daily Prayers will not take more than one hour every day at most. Pilgrimage to Hajj will not take more than a few weeks in a life time. The worshipping of fasting is about 12 to 16 hours (depending on the season and your geographical location) and lasts for a whole month every year. In other words, a faster typically spends more than 400 hours within one month for worshipping Allah! Isn`t this amazing?!

•  Does not interrupt your daily life: Fasting unlike other types of worshipping does not interrupt our daily transactions. One cannot normally offer his/her daily prayers whilst working. You ought to take a break from your work, perform your Wudhu, find a suitable place and offer your Salat. Pilgrimage to Hajj is even more so interrupting your daily life. Fasting exceptionally is the only type of worshipping that can be observed whilst one is doing his normal daily work. It does not interrupt your worldly life at all. Amazingly a faster is still in the state of worshipping Allah even if he/she is asleep. Fasting is only in conflict with sinning.

•  Worshipping God without any action: All other types of worshipping consist of some actions. Take the example of daily Prayers. It is the combination of some recitation of the Quran, some Thikr in different postures. The same applies to Hajj, Zakat etc. Fasting is the only of worshipping of Allah that amazingly consists of some non-doings! Fasting is avoidance of drinking, eating etc. a faster does not require doing anything. It is enough no to do anything! This is the reason why it is in no conflict with our daily lives.

•  The most sincere worshipping: Worshipping God is like a perfume kept in its container. Once the lid is opened the fragrance flies and only its tasteless liquid remains. The best worshipping is the most secret of all. Once its seal is broken it may be spoiled by showing off. All other types of worshipping are prone to show off. Salat, which is meant to be offered in a group for its public nature is prone to showing off and hence can be easily void. Pilgrimage to hajj is even more prone to showing off. Fasting, however, is the only worshipping of Allah that none other than God would really know if you are fasting. Fasting is an inner worshipping and hence it can be the most sincere worshipping.

•  The only worshipping act that there is a penalty (expiation) if missed deliberately. If any Muslim misses his daily Prayers even deliberately, although he has committed a mortal sin, he only has to make up the lapsed Prayers, there is no penalty involved in it. The same applies if one misses his pilgrimage to Hajj. Fasting is the only worshipping act that if is it deliberately missed in addition to making it up, there is a hefty penalty for it. Abdullah Ibn Sanan in an authentic Hadith narrated from Imam Sadiq (a.s) about the expiation against someone who has deliberately-and without any religious justification- broken one day of fasting saying: " He must free a salve or fast two months or feed sixty poor people, but if he was unable to do so, he must give charity as much as he can ." This penalty becomes even heftier if the person has broken his fast with something Haraam such as drinking alcohol or masturbation.

Contradictory attributes in the Quran, with the exception of one!

life-giving read - adhere with patience, word by word

Within the human makeup, it is the “heart” (dil) that attracts God’s love, not the “clay” (gil), which is shared by many other creatures.
The Quran sets up opposition between Creator and creature in many different ways, constantly asserting the divine greatness and human insignificance. Only in talk of love does the Quran speak of mutuality.

God gave news of the attribute of His knowledgeSurely God knows everything [29:62]. He also gave news of the attribute of our ignoranceSurely he is very ignorant, a great wrongdoer [33:72].

He gave news of the attribute of His powerSurely God is powerful over everything [2:109]. He also gave news of the attribute of our incapacityGod strikes a likeness: a servant possessed by his master, having no power over anything [16:75].

He gave news of the attribute of His exaltationSurely the exaltation, all of it, belongs to God [4:139]. He also gave news of our abasementAnd faces are humbled to the Living, the Selfsubsistent [20:111].

He gave news of the attribute of His incomparability and holinessGlory be to your Lord, the Lord of exaltation, above what they describe [37:180]. He also gave news of the attribute of our taintednessDid We not create you of a vile water? [77:20].

He gave news of the attribute of His subsistenceThere subsists the face of your Lord, Possessor of Majesty and Generous Giving [55:27]. He also gave news of the attribute of our annihilationEverything upon the earth is undergoing annihilation [55:26].

He gave news of the attribute of His lifeTrust in the Living who does not die [25:58]. He also gave news of the attribute of our deathSurely you are mortal and they are mortal [39:30].

Since Lordship is His attribute – Your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the first [26:26] – servanthood is our attribute: I created jinn and mankind only to serve Me [51:56].

Since unity is His attribute – Your God is one God [16:22] – pairedness and association are our attribute: Of each thing We created a pair [51:49].

However, when He gave news of love, just as He affirmed love for Himself, so also He affirmed love for usHe loves them, and they love Him [5:54].

Here there must be a secret that will increase the refreshment of the lovers’ spirits: Knowledge, power, life, holiness, subsistence, and unity are the attribute of His Essence, and His Essence is holy and incomparable. These attributes are suited for Him. Glory be to Him who is disposed to exaltation and suited for it!

When one looks at the human essence, it is tainted and distracted. It is a muddiness, a dark water, a clay. Hence, all those attributes appeared within it. But, the site of love is the heart, and the heart is pure gold, the pearl of the breast’s ocean, the ruby of the inmost mystery’s mine. The hand of no one else has touched it, and the eye of no one who is not a confidant has fallen upon it. The witnessing of God’s majesty has polished it, and the burnisher of the Unseen has placed its seal upon it, making it bright and limpid.

The angels are cut off from love because they cannot taste wrath, severity, and distance, and the beasts are far from love because they cannot experience beauty, gentleness, and nearness. Human beings are woven from both nearness and distance, both gentleness and severity. All the contradictory divine attributes are brought together within them. Only they can truly love God, within whom all opposites coincide.

“In the eighteen thousand worlds,
no one drank down the cup that holds the covenant of
They love Him except human beings.”

Letter from Allah to the Prophet (saw)

Amaali of Sh Tousi 1:298, Oyoun Akhbar al-Ridha 25, Ikmaal al-Deen of Sh Sadouq 1:308
Abi Abdillah Jaafar bin Mohamed (as) said,

One day my father (Imam Mohamed bin Ali al-Baqir) said to Jabi bin Abdullah, 'I need to see you privately.'

So when my father was alone with Jabir he said, 'Tell me about the tablet that my mother Fatema (as) had.'

Jabir said,
'Allah is my witness that I went to Fatema, daughter of the Messenger of Allah, to congratulate her on the birth of Hussein (as). I saw a green tablet in her hand made of aquamarine. There was some writing on it with a light that was brighter than the sun and the tablet smelled better than musk.

I asked Fatema, 'What is this tablet O Daughter of the Messenger of Allah?'

She replied, 'This tablet is a gift from Allah to my father. It contains the names of my father, my husband and the names of his successors from my sons after him.'

I asked her to give it to me so that I could write a copy of its contents, and she accepted.
Then my father (Mohamed Bin Ali (as)) asked Jabir, 'Can you show me the copy you made?'
Jabir replied, 'Yes'
Then Jabir went to his house and brought back a piece of paper with him.
My father said to him:
'Look at you copy to see (if) what I say (matches your copy). This is what was written on that tablet:

In the name of Allah, most Gracious, most Merciful.

This is a letter from Allah, the most Honourable, the most Knowledgeable, which was sent with the guardian spirit to Muhammad, the last of the Messengers.

O Muhammad, glorify my Names, be thankful for My grace, and do not deny My blessings.

Do not desire anyone but Me and do not fear anyone but Me, because those who desire anyone but Me or fear anyone but Me will be punished in a way that I have never punished anyone else from all of the worlds.

O Muhammad! I have chosen you from amongst all of the prophets and I have given preference to your successor above all of the successors.

I have made Hasan the container of my knowledge after the time of his father, and I have made Husein the best of the sons from the first to the last, and through Husein the imamate will continue.

Ali, the beauty of the worshippers, will remain from Husein, and then it will be Mohamed, the one who rips open My knowledge, the one who will invite people to My path through the right methods.

Then it will be Jaafar, the truthful in his speech and his actions after whom there will be a deafening conspiracy.

Woe and more woe unto those who deny My slave and the best of My creation, Musa!

Then Ali, the pleasant, will be killed a Kafir deamon, and he will be buried in the city that was built by the righteous slave, next to the worst of Allah's creation. (Harun al-Rasheed, the killer of Imam Musa bin Jaafar).

Then Muhammad will come, the guide to My path, the one who safeguards My sanctity, and the one who will leave Ali behind.

Ali will be the one with two names (Ali and Naqi).

After him, Hassan, the honourable will lead his people.

And after him, Mohamed, will rise at the end of time. There wil be a white cloud over him to offer him shade from the sun. He will speak with an eloquent language and his voice will reach everyone and everywhere. He is the Mahdi of the family of Muhammad and he will fill the earth with justice, just as it will be filled with injustice.'
